Four FAQs About Laser Cataract Surgery

Doctor Shatz, a highly respected physician at SightTrust Eye Institute, performs premium laser cataract and lens implant surgery for residents of Boca Raton, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale. In fact, he limits his practice exclusively to laser and premium lens implant surgery and has performed more of these procedures than any other cataract surgeon in this region.

Many people have heard about laser cataract surgery, but although they may be excellent candidates for the procedure they do not take advantage of its benefits because they are unsure whether it will benefit them. Indeed, the word “surgery” can conjure up feelings of apprehension. In this blog post, we plan on alleviating your concerns by answering four frequently asked questions about premium laser cataract and lens implant surgery.

  1. How do I know if I have cataracts?

The natural lenses inside your eyes are usually perfectly clear from birth. These lenses sit behind the irises and allow you to see up close and far away (assuming that you don’t need glasses). These lenses are very flexible until we enter our 40s, at which point they start to harden.  This causes you to have difficulty reading – a term called presbyopia. By the time we are in our late 50s, the lenses begin to cloud and variably impair distance and reading vision over time. Some of the symptoms of cataracts include the inability to see well when driving at night, blurred vision when reading (even with glasses), and the appearance of glare, halos, or other shapes around bright lights.

  1. Is laser cataract surgery painful?

Laser cataract and lens surgery are completely painless. There are no needles or stitches, and you do not need to wear a patch after the procedure. Additionally, the procedure is performed with the assistance of mild anesthesia.

  1. How long does it take?

The LenSx laser cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that is performed right at our center, and it only takes about 10 minutes per eye. In fact, you can leave for home less than 30 minutes after the procedure has been completed, and you can resume most of your activities right away. If you have cataracts in both eyes, Dr. Shatz can perform bilateral (both eyes) laser cataract surgery. Be sure to ask our eye care specialists if this surgery is right for you. Bilateral same-day cataract surgery is both a safe and effective means to allow patients to return to their normal routines with amazing vision!

  1. Is laser cataract surgery very expensive?

When you think about the advanced technology and the skill of our surgeon, you may assume that our premium laser cataract surgery is extremely expensive. In fact, with available financing options, most of our patients are pleasantly surprised when they find out just how affordable it really is.
