An alternative to other eye correction procedures including LASIK, it is a surgical option that works very well for many patients. Contact SightTrust Eye Institute today to learn more and to schedule your consultation.

What Is a Clear Lens Exchange?

A clear lens exchange is also known as a refractive lens exchange and works differently from laser eye surgery options. With laser eye surgeries, a small amount of tissue is removed from the cornea, which helps the light coming into the eye to focus properly on the patient’s retina. A clean lens exchange leaves the cornea intact and instead deals with the lens that is located behind the cornea. That lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL), which makes it much like cataract surgery.

The natural lens will be removed during surgery and your new intraocular lens will be inserted into the same location as your natural lens was. There are many different measurements that are taken both before and during the surgery to ensure that the lens can be fine-tuned for optimal performance. Intraocular lenses work much in the same way as a natural lens would. As light rays enter the eye the IOL bends (or refracts) the light rays to help you see with accuracy. A lens implant may have various focusing powers, just like prescription contact lenses or eyeglasses.

How Do Intraocular Lenses Work?

An intraocular lens (IOL) implant is an acrylic replacement for your eye’s natural lens and takes over the image-focusing function in your eye. Intraocular lenses are able to correct not only cataracts, but also myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia which often starts to be noticed around age 40. The intraocular lens, just like the natural lens, focuses light inside the eye, enabling you to see the world around you.

If your eyes are continuing to get worse, and you’ve been told that you are not a candidate for laser eye surgery, you should contact SightTrust Eye Institute.
