What Is a Refractive Lens Exchange?

A refractive lens exchange is very similar to a cataract surgery in the procedure; however, the goal isn’t the removal of the cataract (though that is a by-product of the surgery) but instead the removal of the poorly performing lens and the replacement with a new lens that will improve a patient’s vision and could even remove the need for glasses or contact lenses.

There are a number of different lenses that could be used as replacements in a patient’s eyes, and the right one depends on a few factors. One of those factors is what the current eye issues are at the present. If one only has nearsightedness, then there is a lens that can correct for that to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses. The same can be done for farsightedness, presbyopia, as well as astigmatism.

The intraocular lens, which is the replacement for your natural lens, focuses light inside the eye, enabling you to see the world around you. Refractive lens exchange surgery is able to correct a wider range of vision problems compared to any other vision surgery.

Why The Different Lenses

When you meet with our surgeon, Dr. Andrew Shatz, you will probably notice that there are several different intraocular lenses that are available. Depending on what issues they have going on with their eyes, different lenses are made to address those issues. If you have an astigmatism, there are lenses that are toric to help correct this issue. These different lenses provide options for the patient to help address both distance as well as near vision needs.

Our team at SightTrust Eye Institute has performed over 25,000 eye surgeries for patients in Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Weston, Plantation, Davie, and the surrounding areas. Call us today to learn more and to schedule your consultation with our staff for your refractive lens exchange.
