Top Tips on How to Prepare for Your Cataract Surgery in Boca Raton, Parkland, Miami, Davie, Palm Beach, Plantation, and the Surrounding Areas

A cataract is a medical condition that gradually makes your eye’s natural lens cloudy and opaque. This condition creates a blurry vision that worsens as the cataract’s severity increases.

Fortunately, you can cure the condition with cataract surgery. Dr. Andrew Shatz at SightTrust Eye Institute caters to Parkland, Boca Raton, Davie, Palm Beach, Plantation, Miami, and surrounding areas.

How to Prepare for Your Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a procedure that involves replacing the natural lens that has the cataract with an artificial one. It is a simple outpatient procedure that takes about ten minutes per eye. Also, thanks to the femtosecond laser and sedatives we use, the procedure is painless.

Though the surgical procedure is generally safe, there are several things you can do to prepare for the surgery to help minimize any potential risks.

Attend the Pre-Surgery Appointments

Every patient attends at least one appointment before their cataract surgery. We will measure their eye during this appointment and perform tests to ensure everything is ready for surgery. We will prescribe anti-inflammatory and antibiotic eye drops for patients to use on the days leading up to the surgery.

If a patient has certain health conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, we will advise them on what to do to ensure their conditions are safe before proceeding with the surgery.

Follow the Preoperative Instructions

To further ensure a successful procedure, we will provide you with preoperative instructions. Among other information, these instructions will include the things you need to avoid, like strenuous activity, anti-clotting medication, and contact lenses. We will also ask you to avoid eating or drinking for twelve hours before the procedure.

Do Your Research

Understanding the procedure goes a long way in helping alleviate some of the anxiety you might be feeling. As such, it is essential to read through the material we provide. It also helps to ask as many questions as you need and discuss any concerns.

Arrange Transportation

Since you will not drive yourself from the surgery center, it is always best to have a friend or family member take you to and from the procedure. They should also stay with you for the rest of the day while you recover.
