By using the precision of femtosecond laser technology, Dr. Shatz can perform a completely bladeless cataract procedure, with a level of accuracy that has never before been possible. Cataract surgery is a quick, safe and painless procedure that is performed on over 3 million Americans each year. Contrary to popular belief, however, the procedure is not performed with a laser, but rather uses an ultrasound probe. In the traditional cataract procedure, the surgeon makes incisions into the eye with a steel or diamond blade, and then opens the capsule surrounding the cataract using forceps or a needle. The surgeon then uses ultrasound to break apart the cataract, like a microscopic jackhammer. While this is very effective, the ultrasound energy can lead to swelling that can temporarily blur vision.

Dr. Shatz uses the LenSx cataract laser to create the most precise incisions possible, and to gently divide the cataract into small segments – replacing blades, and virtually eliminating the need for ultrasound energy. Additionally, the LenSx laser can treat astigmatism, which in combination with a multifocal intraocular lens can provide one with permanent independence from eyeglasses after cataract surgery.

With the LenSx cataract system, laser vision correction and cataract surgery combine to create a truly custom treatment for the vision of your life!
