Dry eyes can be a frustrating part of life. Whether you’ve experienced itchy, red eyes after a long night of studying, or burning, stinging eyes from looking at a screen too long, we’ve all experienced the discomfort of dry eyes from time to time. However, chronic dry eye is a disease that can be much more irritating and can even affect your vision. If you have been experiencing any of the following symptoms for some time, you may have dry eye disease:

  • Stinging, burning or scratchy eyes
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Redness
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Watery eyes
  • Blurred vision or eye fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light

Dry eye disease occurs when your eyes do not have appropriate lubrication. This leads to a loss of smoothness on the front window of the eye, which in turn causes blurred vision, especially for reading. Your tears may become inadequate for several reasons, the most common being an inability to produce enough tears or the production of poor-quality tears. Dry eyes not only lead to irritation but can also affect quality of vision, which is especially noticeable after eye surgery. Inflammation of the eyelids weakens the oil-producing meibomian glands, which produces a poor layer of tears.

How do you know if you have eyelid inflammation? While most people should be diagnosed by an eye doctor, you may notice redness at the lash line, or crusting at the base of your lashes. Anyone can develop dry eye, but it becomes more common with age. While this can be a frustrating condition, SightTrust Eye Institute wants you to know that there is hope, and you do have options!

Did you know that there is a great non-surgical option that targets eyelid inflammation? Radiofrequency (RF) is a quick, in-office treatment that can improve dry eyes as well as the quality of vision with premium intraocular lenses (IOLs). FORMA-I is an innovative non-surgical procedure that delivers bipolar RF to the delicate layers below the surface of your eyelids.

FORMA-I treatment improves blood circulation of the eyelid area, with the sensation of a warm, gentle massage. The small applicator size and precision RF depth control allow for safe treatment of delicate areas, such as your eyelids. The benefits of this heat combined with radiofrequency for dry eye are that in combination they:

  • Open clogged meibomian glands to allow increased oil onto the eye.
  • Generate heat that stimulates new collagen formation, which produces aesthetic benefits including reduced fine lines and wrinkles, and tightened skin.
  • Bring white blood cells and stem cells to the eyelids skin to reduce inflammation.

Another benefit of FORMA-I is that it can be used on all skin types. While FORMA-I is a fantastic option to help improve some dry eye symptoms, it is not a cure. Treatments are recommended twice a year to prevent regrowth of blood vessels and to maintain effective tear production, and these treatments consist of a series of 4 sessions separated by 2-3 weeks to produce the maximum benefit. FORMA-I is offered as part of SightTrust Eye Institute’s Vision Improvement Program™ (VIP) helping to boost dry eye control both before and after lens surgery.

At SightTrust Eye Institute, we believe patients undergoing premium lens procedures deserve the sharpest vision possible without glasses, and this can only be achieved with well-lubricated eyes that have the smoothest surface possible. We are proud to offer this amazing technology and recommend radiofrequency for dry eye patients receiving premium implants who have eyelid inflammation. If you suffer from dry eyes or are planning on having permanent vision correction surgery at SightTrust, reach out to discuss how FORMA-I and the VIP plan can significantly improve your results.
