Dry, irritated eyes can be more than an occasional inconvenience. For people who regularly experience burning, discomfort, fluctuating vision, or the feeling that something is constantly in their eyes, traditional solutions such as artificial tears may provide temporary relief without addressing what is contributing to the problem.
For some patients, that underlying issue is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a common contributor to evaporative dry eye. When the oil-producing meibomian glands, which sit on the lash line of the eyelids, are not functioning properly, the tear film can become unstable and evaporate too quickly.
That is where newer, energy-based dry eye treatments are changing the conversation.
SightTrust patients now have access to Envision Dry Eye Rejuvenation Therapy at Archetype Aesthetics (https://archetypeaesthetics.com/), SightTrust’s sister company in Sunrise, Florida. Envision combines two technologies – Lumecca-i intense pulsed light (IPL) and Forma-i radiofrequency (RF) – to target factors associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and improve the environment surrounding the ocular surface.
Why Treating Dry Eye May Require More Than Eye Drops
A healthy tear film is more complex than simply having enough tears.
Oil produced by the meibomian glands forms a “shell-like” outer cover of the tears, helping to prevent them from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or do not release healthy oils effectively, eyes may become irritated even when there seems to be enough tears being produced.
This is why repeatedly adding moisture with artificial tears does not always solve the problem. For patients whose dry eye is associated with meibomian gland dysfunction, treatment may also need to focus on improving gland function and reducing inflammation around the eyelids.
Envision was designed with this type of dry eye in mind.
What Is Envision Dry Eye Therapy?
Envision is a noninvasive treatment using intense pulsed light (IPL) and radiofrequency (RF) on the eyelids.
At Archetype Aesthetics, Envision Dry Eye Rejuvenation Therapy combines Lumecca-i and Forma-i as part of a personalized treatment approach. The treatment targets meibomian gland dysfunction while also addressing inflammation of the eyelids which helps contribute to this condition.
Each technology approaches the problem differently.
Lumecca-i: Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)
Lumecca-i delivers controlled pulses of light to the skin surrounding the eyes.
IPL energy targets abnormal blood vessels and inflammatory processes around the eyelids while supporting healthier meibomian gland function.
Rather than simply lubricating the surface of the eye, the goal is to improve some of the conditions contributing to tear-film instability.
Forma-i: Radiofrequency Therapy (RF)
Forma-i uses controlled radiofrequency energy around the eye and eyelid area.
The gentle heating produced by RF therapy warms the meibomian glands to support the flow of the oils that contribute to a healthy tear film. Radiofrequency energy also stimulates collagen within the surrounding tissue, creating an additional aesthetic benefit for some patients.
At Archetype, Forma-i is paired with Lumecca-i to create a dual-technology approach to dry eye therapy.
Why Combine IPL and Radiofrequency?
Using both technologies allows treatment to approach meibomian gland dysfunction from multiple angles.
Recent research supports this combined strategy. A 2026 study evaluated 286 patients with meibomian gland dysfunction-related dry eye who received radiofrequency, IPL, or a combination of the two. All three groups demonstrated improvements in dry-eye symptoms and clinical measurements, while patients receiving combined RF and IPL showed the most consistent improvements.
As with any dry eye treatment, results vary and Envision is not appropriate for every cause of dry eye. A proper evaluation is important to determine whether meibomian gland dysfunction is contributing to a patient’s symptoms and whether energy-based treatment belongs in their care plan.
What Does an Envision Treatment Feel Like?
One advantage of Envision is that treatment is non-surgical and requires little to no downtime.
Treatment begins with a consultation to evaluate the patient’s individual concerns and determine an appropriate plan.
During treatment, Lumecca-i delivers pulses of IPL energy to the skin surrounding the eyes. Forma-i is then used to deliver controlled radiofrequency energy around the treatment area.
The experience is quick and generally well tolerated, with patients typically able to return to their normal activities afterward.
The number and frequency of treatments needed will depend on the individual patient’s symptoms, gland function, ocular surface health, and treatment plan.
Dry Eye Care Meets Aesthetic Medicine
There is another interesting aspect of Envision: the treatment area sits at the intersection of eye health and aesthetics.
Both Lumecca and Forma technologies are also used within aesthetic medicine. When adapted specifically for the delicate area surrounding the eyes, they can address dry eye concerns while supporting the appearance and quality of the periocular skin.
That makes Archetype Aesthetics a natural home for the treatment.
Archetype focuses on regenerative and technology-driven treatments in a relaxing, professional environment. Its service suite includes IPL, radiofrequency treatments, skin rejuvenation, light therapy, skincare, lymphatic treatments, and other advanced aesthetic services in addition to Envision Dry Eye Therapy.
For SightTrust patients, the collaboration also creates continuity between advanced eye care and treatments involving the delicate area surrounding the eyes.
Is Envision Right for Your Dry Eye?
Dry eye can have several causes, and the best result depends on directing treatment to each individual’s symptoms.
For patients with signs of meibomian gland dysfunction or evaporative dry eye, technologies such as IPL and radiofrequency may provide another option beyond relying exclusively on drops.
The first step in treating you is determining the causes of your dry eyes. If Envision is determined to be an appropriate treatment for you, then your next step is taking advantage of this amazing technology!
