Vision correction surgery has come a long way over the last several years. Lens-based procedures such as cataract and clear lens replacement surgeries can now not only improve eyesight, but also allow patients to see at all ranges without the need for glasses. Technology, procedures, and techniques have advanced to allow for faster, safer, and more accurate results, and are now the normal rather than the exception. One amazing example is Bilateral Same-Day Cataract and Lens Surgery (BSDCS). It is now possible to safely and effectively have both your eyes treated on the same day, rather than having to wait days or weeks between procedures.

Bilateral same-day cataract and lens surgery treats both eyes on one visit, separating each procedure by minutes rather than weeks.  This technique has been proven in several large studies to be equally safe as waiting an arbitrary number of days or weeks between each eye being treated.

An example of a large study of surgeries recorded over 95,000 surgeries in the Swedish National Cataract Registry from 2003 to 2009 and reported a lower complication rate for patients undergoing same-day surgery on both eyes than for those who had surgery performed on separate days. Additionally, a survey of 3,636 Kaiser Permanente patients who had undergone cataract surgery between 2017 and 2018 showed that 96% of the patients who received same-day surgeries would choose it again compared to only 80% of patients who had one eye performed at a time on separate days.

Additional benefits of same-day surgeries include:

  • Fewer Visits to the Operating Room
Fewer trips for surgeries reduces the burden of transportation and help during recovery. For younger individuals, fewer trips means less time off from work.
  • Single anesthesia session
Having both surgeries on the same day reduces a patient’s exposure to anesthesia by half, which is important for elderly patients or those who have certain medical conditions.
  • Shorter postoperative healing period
Since both eyes are healing at the same time there is quicker rehabilitation and adaptation to the new vision, which translates into an increased quality of life.

At SightTrust Eye Institute, Dr. Shatz is a pioneer in these surgeries, and has been performing bilateral same-day lens surgeries in over 95% of his patients for more than a decade. With all these benefits, it’s clear to see that bilateral same-day cataract and lens surgeries are a great option. It is important to note that while both eyes are operated on the same day, each eye is treated separately with new sterile instruments and supplies, and Dr. Shatz and his technicians re-scrub with new gowns and gloves between procedures. We would love the chance to serve you in a way that gets you back to your normal life as soon as possible, while providing excellent cutting-edge care.
